Generations Transformed

Our friends at Family Promise of Hendricks County shared this story with us about the Butterfly House on Scannell Lane:

A multi-generational family of three (a mother, grandmother, and two-year-old daughter) came to Family Promise for support from incredibly difficult circumstances. They had experienced domestic violence, unsafe and unstable working environments, overwhelming debt, and an eviction. Despite these challenges, they remained determined to create a better future for the mother’s young daughter.

During their time at the Butterfly House, shared transitional housing for single mothers and their children, they made tremendous progress. They worked hard to pay off their eviction and began rebuilding their financial stability. The mother secured a great full-time position with FedEx and even took on a part-time job as a waitress to help reach their goals more quickly. The grandmother began to recognize her worth and made the courageous decision to permanently leave her abusive husband. Together, they became a strong, united team, lovingly raising the young child while supporting one another every step of the way.

As they continued accomplishing their goals by leaps and bounds, something beautiful began to happen; they allowed themselves to dream. For the first time in a long time, the future felt hopeful and possible. And that dream became a reality.

After thoughtful planning, another member of the family – the mother’s sister – made the decision to move from another state to join them wherever they land. Together, they determined that combining households, sharing expenses, and continuing to build a strong support system as a family was the best path forward. They then secured a home in Texas where they can continue growing and thriving together as a family.

The grandmother has already found employment in the same field she was working in Indiana, and the daughter will be transferring her FedEx position to Texas. She has even begun exploring local restaurants near their new home to pursue part-time work if needed.

Family Promise is incredibly proud of this family of strong women. While Texas is a long way from Indiana, they are cheering them on every step of the way. They shared it has been an honor to walk alongside them on this journey toward safety, financial stability, and renewed hope. Thank you for allowing us to be part of your story.

The mother sent these words of gratitude:

"I am forever grateful to Family Promise of Hendricks County. I made the biggest transformation in such a short amount of time. I am a very hard-working young woman who had what I thought was a string of bad luck. Reflecting on the past 6 months or so, I see now that it was God making me uncomfortable. Forcing me to make hard but better decisions. I couldn't have grown to be a more productive, financially responsible, humble, and patient person if it wasn't for the support of the Butterfly House staff. Shout Out to Soraya and Kayla for their generosity and kindness. Such beautiful souls. Thank you Butterfly House for helping me break out of my cocoon."
